Patchouli Essential Oil, Botanical Name Pogostemon Cablin, extract from Patchouli's leaf by steam distillation, Patchouli essential oil has a bitter aroma, but very small proportions in a blend can give a mysterious, oriental characteristic. Used a s little as 0.5% in blends with very pleasing results. Patchouli has a long history of use in the traditional medicine of Asia as a stimulant, tonic, antiseptic and febrifuge, as well as in treating snake bites and the stings of poisonous insects, and it has always been used as a perfume, insecticide and antiseptic.

In aromatherapy, Patchouli has some valuable uses in skincare and the treatment of skin disorders, it is anti-inflammatory and antiseptic in effect. Its also fungicidal and is a cell regenerator. This combination of properties makes it useful in treating acne, cracked skin, certain type of eczema, fungal infections such as athlete's foot, some skin allergies and dandruff. It has been used in treatments for obesity, because it reduces fluid retention. However, it is helpful for all forms of depression, anxiety and stress related conditions.

It is a bushy plant with large, soft, furry leaves. The oils is thick and dark brown, often with a green tinge. The odour is hot, musty and pungent, strong, penetrating and so persistent. It is widely used in the perfumery trade as a fixative due to its long lasting character. The active principles are mainly patchoulene, patchoulol, norpatchoulol with tracts of eugenol, cadinene, carvone, caryophyllene.

Since it also seems to curb appetite it is probably useful for overall weight reduction. Could well be helpful in cases of diarrhoea too. Its bracing action on the central nervous system may account for libido. Also offset heavy sweating, though certainly has a marked deodorizing action, helpful when feeling hot and bothered. In any event, it seems to relieve thenasty effects from insect and snake bites.

Patchouli oil Effect on Skin Said to be a tissue regenerator, helping re-growth of skin cells and forming scar tissue. Apparently cools inflamed conditions and heals rough, cracked skin, sores and wounds. Some relief may also be obtained from acne, eczema, fungal infections and scalp disorders.
