Description
Patchouli Essential Oil, Botanical Name Pogostemon Cablin, extract from Patchouli's leaf by steam distillation, Patchouli essential oil has a bitter aroma, but very small proportions in a blend can give a mysterious, oriental characteristic. Used a s little as 0.5% in blends with very pleasing results. Patchouli has a long history of use in the traditional medicine of Asia as a stimulant, tonic, antiseptic and febrifuge, as well as in treating snake bites and the stings of poisonous insects, and it has always been used as a perfume, insecticide and antiseptic.
In aromatherapy, Patchouli has some valuable uses in skincare and the treatment of skin disorders, it is anti-inflammatory and antiseptic in effect. Its also fungicidal and is a cell regenerator. This combination of properties makes it useful in treating acne, cracked skin, certain type of eczema, fungal infections such as athlete's foot, some skin allergies and dandruff. It has been used in treatments for obesity, because it reduces fluid retention. However, it is helpful for all forms of depression, anxiety and stress related conditions.
It is a bushy plant with large, soft, furry leaves. The oils is thick and dark brown, often with a green tinge. The odour is hot, musty and pungent, strong, penetrating and so persistent.
