What is Carrier Oil
Vital ingredient when used as massage blends with essential oil. Carrier oil cold pressed from natural plant, is perfect for skin to nourish and regenerate.
When essential oils are used for massage they need to be mixed into a base or carrier oil as they are far too powerful and concentrated to be used on the skin undiluted. Most carrier oils have therapeutic properties of their own, which can be chosen to complement those of the essential oils used with them.
For example, apricot kernel and avocado oil are all rich and nourishing and help dry and aging skins. Olive oil has many valuable healing properties. Wheatgerm oil rich in Vitamin E is used to reduce scar tissue after injury or operations and also facial scaring caused by severe acne. It is a rather sticky oil which does not act as a lubricant and needs to be added to one of the more free flowing oils, usually in the ratio of 25% wheatgerm to 75% others oil. Wheatgerm is also a natural anti-oxidant which helps to prevent other oils from becoming rancid or oxidising. Small amounts and up to 10% will improve the keeping ability of any other oil by a month or two. All carrier oils oxidise sooner or later after being exposed to the air and become unfit for use. In aromatherapy, is very certain that they are of good quality, cold pressed and containing no additives of any kind.
It is a perfectly normal reaction to tense muscles when we feel mentally tense, it is important to be able to let go of this physical tension before the tight muscles themselves convey a sense of discomfort and unease to the mind, thus setting up a vicious circle of tension. This is one of the ways in which mental stress can lead to real physical symptoms, massage can break this chain of events, especially when we work with essential oils that have a calming, soothing or uplifting effect on the mind as well as the body. Massage is vital to aromatherapy because it provides us with the most effective way of introducing essential oils to the body. The skin absorbs these oils very readily, and get the maximum possible amount of essential oil circulating in the body to stimulate the body own healing processes.
Usually in the proportion of 3% essential oil to carrier oil, and that approximately 20 drops = 1ml essential oil, 40 drops = 2ml essential, 60 drops = 3ml essential etc.,
You can also use the following measurements as a guideline when diluting the essential oils in a vegetable base oil:
