What is Essential Oil

What is Essential Oil, Essential oil HK Essential oils are natural and purity. Which is extracted from vital elements of nature, and from earth most treasures.

Essential oils are the base materials of the aromatherapist. These highly aromatic substances are made in plants by special cells is called an essence. Plants in general are chemical factories. They inhabit the interface between light and dark, sun and earth, drawing energy from each and synthesising this into molecules of carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Essences are produced in the plant in highly specialised secretory cells. These may be in any parts of the plant, and the essence is released if the plant is crushed, giving off its characteristic perfume. The essence is becomes an essential oil after distillation.

The essential oils is extracted from the plant by a variety of means, depending again on the particular species. The most common method is steam distillation, although other important methods are solvent extraction, expression or enfleurage etc., Essential oils are very highly concentrated, and should only rarely be used in their undiluted form. They are very volatile, that is they evaporate quickly on contact with the air. This is one of the reasons why they are so quickly effective in treatment. Ultra violet light damages the oils, so they need to be stored in opaque bottle.

Essential oils are highly complex chemically, and this very complexity makes them both versatile and safe, since the many constituents act together and balance each others effects. When two or more essential oils are mixed together, they become more active than any of the oils when used singly. Lavender, in particular, is known to increase the activity of other oils with which it is blended. Essential oils dissolve easily in fatty oils and also in alcohol. But they do not dissolve in water.

Steam Distillation

The main method by which essential oils are extracted from plants. Distillation involves heating the plant material, the heat and steam cause the walls of the specialised plant cells in which the plant essence is stored, to break down and release the essence in the form of a vapour.

Enfleurage / Solvent

Traditional methods have been used in the perfume industry, and used to extract the finest quality essences from delicate flowers. It is a laborious and therefore costly process, which accounts for the high price of these oils. Oils produced by this method are known as Absolutes, and are very concentrated in character. Their perfuming power and therapeuties are very strong indeed, and smaller amounts are needed to give the effect. They are normally colored and are usually thicker and more viscous than essential oils. It may solidify in the bottle at room temperature, but quickly becomes liquid again when held in the hand.

Expression / Cold Pressed

The essential oils of citrus fruits are obtained by simple pressure. The peel is then squeezed to press out the aromatic oil, with a certain amount of juice. This is left to stand until the oil can be separated off from the top of the juice.

Immediately below the skin, the particles of essential oil pass into the fluid that baths every cell of the body, and from here they can pass through the ultra-thin walls of the lymph ducts and tiny blood vessels. The aromatic particles pass into the general circulation, and travel around the body.

Massage with essential oils is by far the most important application of aromatherapy, both of these kinds of healing enter into massage. Massage can relieve pain, ease tense and tight muscles, increate circulation, or benefit the physical body in other ways.
