Properties :

This is the name given to any swelling due to excess fluid in the tissues. However, there are many other forms of oedema which can be effectively treated with essential oils, especially premenstrual fluid retention, reducing the puffiness of legs and ankles that can occur after prolonged standing, on long flights for which essential oils massage are helpful. These oils have a stimulant action on the lymphatic system, which is responsible for draining excess fluid from the body tissues, and a specialised form of lymphatic massage is best in treating any form of oedema, though any kind of massage with appropriate oils with help. Fluid accumulation is often associated with toxic wastes in the body, for example in cellulite, it is one of the body's ways of trying to render toxins less dangerous by diluting them.

An excellent purifier of the body, mainly due to its detoxifying effect on the liver and cleanses the bowels. It is a very effective diuretic, driving out toxins particularly of dropsy and fluid retention could also be set to rights. Its diuretic properties are useful with water retention during menstruation and may be effective with obesity and cellulite.

How To Used :

Use as a massage oil or after bath as a body oil, apply the oil on skin when lightly dry, start at the feet and work up. The oil will mix with the water left on the surface of your skin to form a creamy lotion. Or you can add 5 to 10 drops to a hot bath to promote healthy circulation.

Notes: Oedema may be localised and temporary, or it may affect larger areas or the whole body. Generalised oedema is often a symptom of serious illness, so no aromatherapist should attempt to treat this except in collaboration with a doctor.
