Description
Manuka Essential Oil, Botanical Name Leptospermum Scoparium, extract from Manuka's leaf and seed by steam distillation. As you may expect from the comparison with Tea Tree, Manuka essential oil is antiviral, antifungal and highly bactericidal across a wide spectrum. It can be used for all respiratory tract infections, cold, catarrh, sinusitis, bronchitis and the fact that it is also decongestant is a bonus. Used Manuka essential oil in the bath for cold, as a gargle for sore throats and dabbed neat on to incipient cold sores, against all of which it proved highly effective. Because of the pleasant aroma, it is a very agreeable oil to use in vaporisers during an epidemic.
It is an excellent antiseptic for use on the skin, and can be applied to cuts, spots boils, ulcers, being particularly indicated where healing has been slow. 1% to 2% is a suitable dilution for massage, is a good idea to use a rich carrier oil, such as avocado or jojoba for people with dry or sensitive skin. Manuka has an antihistamine action and is anti-allergic generally. It is good for insect bits and stings, and would be worth trying for allergic rashes. Its also good local analgesic, helpful for muscular pain and rheumatism. It is an effective insecticide and the pleasant scent makes it particularly suitable for use in air sprays or burners. The delicate scent means that you can blend Manuka with virtually any other oils that would be therapeutically appropriate. Used in situations where the stronger and more medicinal smelling oils might not be welcome. Its gives us a good alternative to Tea Tree as an anti-infectious oil, which is welcome especially when long term treatment is needed.
The shrubs grow in the bush and are harvested from the wild. The best Manuka oil comes from plants growing at high altitudes, and has been found to be more antibacterial than from lower altitudes. The oil is virtually colourless. The main constituents are caryophyllene, geraniol, pinene, linalol and humulene and there is also an unusual constituents, Leptospermone which is very insecticidal. The smell is quite elusive very sweet and gentle.
