Description
Lavandin Essential Oil Extra Blue Organic, Botanical Name Lavandula Hybrida, extract from Lavandin's flowers by steam distillation. Lavandin is a hybrid Lavender which grows wild in areas where true Lavender is cultivated. The most widespread varieties in cultivation are Abrial, Grosso, Radovan and Blue. Of these, Abrial has the finest aroma and is more often used as a substitute for Lavender in perfumery. Blue contains a high proportion of esters, and is the most antispasmodic while Radovan is high in linalol and the most bactericidal. If you can be certain which variety you are using, you can make informed choices about its best use in aromatherapy.
The properties of the oil reflect its hybrid parentage, having something in common with both true and Spike Lavender. Most notably, it is far less sedative than Lavender. Lavandin is very effective as an inhalation for colds, catarrh, sinusitis and other respiratory problems and a good alternative to Lavender for these uses. Its also good for muscular pain and stiffness, being both analgesic and rubefacient. Its very refreshing in the bath, excellent for clearing headaches.
The bushes have larger, darker blue flowers than Lavender, and are extremely fragrant. They give a much higher yield of essential oil than true Lavender, and for that reason the oil is cheaper. However, if we are going to use Lavandin it should be as an oil in its own right and not confused with Lavender. This oil is a darkish blue, with a refreshing, slightly camphorous smell. Contains about 30% of linalyl acetate, linalol, cineol, camphene and other minor constituents.
